From นาม (naam, “name”) + สกุล (sà-gun, “lineage, class”).
Probably first used on 22 March 2455 BE (1913 CE), when the Family Names Act 1913 (พระราชบัญญัติขนานนามสกุล พระพุทธศักราช ๒๔๕๖) was promulgated.
