Borrowed from Middle Chinese (MC thanH, “charcoal”). Cognate with Isan ถ่าน, Lao ຖ່ານ (thān), Northern Thai ᨳ᩵ᩣ᩠ᨶ (thaan²), Khün ᨳ᩵ᩣ᩠ᨶ (thaan²), ᦏᦱᧃᧈ (ṫhaan¹), Tai Dam ꪖ꪿ꪱꪙ (thán), Shan ထၢၼ်ႇ (thàan), Tai Nüa ᥗᥣᥢᥱ (thǎan), Phake ထꩫ် (than).
