Uncertain. Possibly:

  • Corrupted from the first part of Min Nan 商店 (shop, store) (Hokkien: siong-tiàm, siang-tiàm, siong-tùiⁿ Teochew: siang1 diam3), or contracted from the whole word.
  • Pranee (1983) suggested it was from Min Nan  / (varied) (Hokkien: chham Teochew: cam1, cang1) [1][2]
