Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܐܘܫܥܢܐ ('ōsha‘nā). Ultimately from Biblical Hebrew הוֹשַׁע נָא (hōsha‘ nā, “please save”).

  1. (Christianity, Judaism) hosanna, a cry of praise or adoration to God, said to have been shouted by the crowd accompanying Jesus on his triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
    • 1939, Peshitta New Testament, Matthew 21.09:
      അവന്റെ മുന്നിൽ പോയിരുന്നവരും പിന്നിൽ വന്നിരുന്നവരുമായ ജനക്കൂട്ടങ്ങൾ: ദാവീദിന്റെ പുത്രന് ഓശാന! കർത്താവിന്റെ നാമത്തിൽ വരുന്നവൻ അനുഗ്രഹീതനാകുന്നു! ഉന്നതങ്ങളിൽ ഓശാന! എന്ന് ആർത്തുപറഞ്ഞിരുന്നു.
      avanṟe munnil pōyirunnavaruṁ pinnil vannirunnavarumāya janakkūṭṭaṅṅaḷ: dāvīdinṟe putranŭ ōśāna! kaṟttāvinṟe nāmattil varunnavaṉ anugrahītanākunnu! unnataṅṅaḷil ōśāna! enn āṟttupaṟaññirunnu.
      The crowd tha went in front of him and went behind him shouted out: Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest.
