Possibly derived from Sanskrit क्षुल्ल (kṣulla), with a semantic narrowing from "small" to "small insect". Compare (Kongu) Tamil சுள்ளான் (cuḷḷāṉ) and Tulu ಸೊಳ್ಳೆ (soḷḷe).
