Etymology
From વિશ્રામ (viśrām) + વાર (vār), literally “rest-day”. First attested in the 19th century to translate Ancient Greek σάββατον (sábbaton, “Sabbath”) / Hebrew שַׁבָּת (šabbāṯ), from the root שׁ־ב־ת (sh-b-t, “rest; not working”).
