Inherited from Sanskrit स्थान (sthāna, “fortress; state, condition”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stáHnam. Cognate with Kashmiri تھانہٕ (thānụ, “police station”), and Belarusian стан (stan, “condition, state”). Doublet of ਥਾਣ (thāṇ, “place”).
