ਅਰਮਾਨ

Punjabi

Etymology

Borrowed from Persian آرمان (ârmân, desire, ideal), which itself was likely borrowed from Proto-Sogdic *rm''n (to move/raise).[1] The first syllable is likely from Proto-Indo-European *h₃er- (whence English run). Unrelated to English arm which is from *h₂er-. Unrelated to Armenia. Unrelated to Gothic 𐌰𐍂𐌼𐌰𐌽 (arman), Vandalic *arman.; Cognate with Tajik Ормон (Ormon, male given name), Belarusian ры́нуць (rýnucʹ, to rush, to dash), Belarusian раць (racʹ, war), Ancient Greek ὄρνῡμῐ (órnūmĭ, to set upon), and Old Armenian յառնեմ (yaṙnem, to rise).
