Inherited from Prakrit लड्डुअ (laḍḍua) without cluster simplification—compare Punjabi ਲੱਡੂ (laḍḍū)—, from Sanskrit लड्डुक (laḍḍuka), from लड्डु (laḍḍu, “a kind of sweetmeat”). Compare लाड़ू (lāṛū), लड़ुआ (laṛuā). Cognate with Gujarati લાડવો (lāḍvo), લાડુ (lāḍu), Marathi लाडू (lāḍū), Odia ଲଡୁ (laḍu), Bengali লাড্ডু (laḍḍu) / নাড়ু (naṛu), Sinhalese ලඩු (laḍu).
