Semi-learned borrowing from Sanskrit रूप्य (rū́pya, “silver, stamped coin, (later) rupee”). Compare Pali रूपिय (rūpiya, “silver”), Prakrit रुप्प (ruppa, “silver”). Doublet of रूप (rūp), रूपा (rūpā), and रूप्य (rūpya). Cognate with Indonesian rupiah, Dhivehi ރުފިޔާ (rufiyā), Gujarati રૂપિયો (rūpiyo), Punjabi ਰੁਪਈਆ (rupaīā), Nepali रुपियाँ (rupiyā̃), and Bengali রুপিয়া (rupiẏa).
