Etymology

Traditionally derived from a Proto-Indo-European *mēwHdʰ- (to complain or care about something), and compared with Ancient Greek μῦθος (mûthos, tale, legend). Mayrhofer does not mention this theory, and instead considers the word to be a derivative of मिथ् (mith, to alternate).[1] For a semantic parallel from the same Indo-European root, compare Proto-Germanic *missaz (wrong; divergent).
