From Proto-Indo-Iranian *nūnám, derived from Proto-Indo-European *nu (now) (whence नु ()).

  4. (especially in later Sanskrit) certainly, assuredly, indeed (also in questions like कदा नूनम् (kadā nūnam, when indeed?))
