  • From Proto-Indo-European *ǵénh₁-ti-s ~ *ǵn̥h₁-téy-s (birth, production; kind). Cognate with Latin gēns, Ancient Greek γένεσις (génesis), Proto-Germanic *kinþiz (whence English kind). By surface analysis, from the root जन् (jan) +‎ -ति (-ti).[1]
