From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ćśáydiṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sčáydiš, from Proto-Indo-European *skéydt (“cut off”), the aorist of *skeyd- (“to split”). Cognate with Russian цеди́ть (cedítʹ, “to strain, to filter”), Ancient Greek σχίζω (skhízō), Latin scindō.
