From Old Marathi चेडू (ceḍū), चेंडू (ceṃḍū), from Sanskrit कन्दुक (kanduka) or from Middle Kannada. Compare Modern Kannada ಚೆಂಡು (ceṇḍu), Tamil செண்டு (ceṇṭu) and Hindi गेंद (gend).
