Etymology

From Ashokan Prakrit *𑀔𑁄𑀓𑁆𑀔 (*khokkha, “hollow”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀮- (-la-) + -𑀓- (-ka-). Compare Punjabi ਖੋਖਰਾ (khokhrā, “open, empty, hollow”), Nepali खुकुलो (khukulo, “loose, slack”), Gujarati ખોખું (khokhũ, “empty box”), Odia ଖୋଖୋ (khokho, “sound of hollow things when struck”), Marathi खोंक (khoṅka, “hole, bruise”), खोकस (khokas, “hollow grains”).
