Pokorny compared Latin eheu for a Proto-Indo-European *ehew (an interjection of surprise), with an expressive *h consonant (unrelated to the laryngeals of the laryngeal theory, which he did not embrace) used only in a handful of basic interjections such as *hā̆ (laughter, surprise). However, Latin ⟨h⟩ can correspond to Sanskrit ह् (h) here if the word was Proto-Indo-European *(h₁)eǵʰew or *(h₁)egʰew. Due to the words' expressive nature however, such a formal relationship is not usually assumed. This etymology is incomplete.
