Inherited from Aramaic אֶצְבְּעָא (ʾeṣbəʿā). The deletion of the initial alaph also occurs in Classical Syriac ܨܸܒ݂ܥܵܐ (ṣeḇʿā) and Turoyo ܨܰܘܥܐ (ṣawco); compare Arabic إِصْبَع (ʔiṣbaʕ) and Hebrew אֶצְבַּע ('étsba).
