Partial calque of Classical Persian شَایَد (šāyad, perhaps, possibly),[1] via the verb ښائيدل (x̌âyidəl),[2] from Classical Persian شَایْ (šāy, present stem of شَایِسْتَن (šāyistan, to be appropriate)).
