Etymology

  • Inherited from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (mʾtk' /mādag/, essence, substance). Compare Manichaean Middle Persian [Manichaean needed] (mʾyg /māyag/).
  • The meaning of "leaven" is from the same root; however, it is from Proto-Iranian: *(ham)mātaka(naH) ((of) same material, mix). Compare with Sogdian ܡܐܕܬܢ (mʾdn /māδan/), Khwarezmian ماذک (mʾδk /*māδa/), ماذیک (mʾδyk /*māδē/), Gurani ئامیان (amyan /āmiyān/), Zazaki ameyn (/āmayn/), Mazanderani مایه (māya ~ -e), Central Kurdish ھەوێن (hewên /hawēn/), Northern Kurdish havên (/hāvēn/), and perhaps Ossetian ӕнтуан (æntwan)
