Etymology
Unknown. Possibilities:
- A form II intensive of Arabic قَفَزَ (qafaza, “to jump”), with a sporadic sound shift analogous to Maltese qabeż.
- A form II intensive of Arabic قَمَصَ (qamaṣa, “to rear one's legs; to saunter”), with ص (ṣ) > ز (z) as in Arabic لَزِقَ (laziqa, “to stick”), بَزَقَ (bazaqa, “to spit”) or newer North Levantine Arabic زَقَّف (“to clap”).
