North Levantine Arabic

Etymology 1

Extension of قَرَش (ʔaraš, to crunch) with a root infix ـمـ (-m-). Perhaps also somehow descended from Arabic قَرْمَشَ (qarmaša, to spoil, ruin).

Pronunciation

Verb

قرمش • (ʔarmaš) (non-past يقرمش (yʔarmiš), verbal noun قرمشة (ʔarmaše))

  1. to crunch something while eating it [with عَلَى (ʕala) or عَ (ʕa) ‘on (something being eaten)’]
    Synonym: قرقش (ʔarʔaš)
  2. to snack [with عَلَى (ʕala) or عَ (ʕa) ‘on (something)’]
    Synonyms: لقمش (laʔmaš), نقرش (naʔraš)

Etymology 2

Seemingly a derivative of the above verb قرمش (ʔarmaš, to crunch), as it is present in nearly all Arabic dialects whereas قُرمُش (ʔurmuš) is only found in South Lebanon. Perhaps created by copying the vowels of the original term جُنْدُب (jundub, grasshopper).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈʔur.muʃ/ [ˈʔormoʃ, -muʃ]

Noun

قرمش • (ʔurmušm (plural قرامش (ʔarāmiš))

  1. (South Lebanon) grasshopper
    Synonym: (elsewhere) جندب (jundub, jindub)
