Corresponds to Arabic طَلْيَانِيّ (ṭalyāniyy). Synchronically from طِلْيَان (ṭilyān, “Italians”, collective noun) +‎ ـِي (-i, individuating nisba suffix), but whether the collective or singulative came first historically is unclear. No matter which preceded the other, however, the overall form reflects Italian italiano or the cognate of a regional Italian language, like Friulian talian.
