Etymology 2
Modern partial calque of French khanat, itself a compound of khan + -at (modeled after terms like califat). Adapted into Iranian Persian as خانات (xânât) following a pattern of transcribing French -at as ـات (-ât), as seen in کنترات (kontorât) from French contrat.
Older Persian terms for “khanate” include خاننشین (xān-nišīn / xân-nešin), خانی (xānī / xâni), and خانیت (xāniyyat / xâniyat), but خانات (xânât) became common in Iranian Persian during the 20th century through Western historiographical influence.
