تدشى

North Levantine Arabic

Etymology

From an earlier form resembling *تْجَشَّى (tjaššā), inherited from Arabic تَجَشَّأَ (tajaššaʔa, to burp) with dissimilation of the postalveolar ج (j), originally an affricate /d͡ʒ/, away from the also-postalveolar ش (š). The same dissimilation produced تْدَشَّر (tdaššar, to break up, to divorce) from Arabic تَجَشَّرَ (tajaššara).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /t.ˈdaʃ.ʃa/, [dˈdæʃʃa]

Verb

  1. to burp
Near-synonym: تْبَعَّج (tbaʕʕaj, to burp, to belch)
