بناني
North Levantine Arabic
Etymology
From reanalyzing لِبْنَان (libnān, “Lebanon”) as *البْنَان (*l-bnān, pronounced identically, literally “the Banon”). With this reanalysis cemented, the definite article الـ (l-) regularly drops when forming nisba demonyms; compare السُّودَان (s-sūdān, “the Sudan”) → سُودَانِي (sūdāni, “Sudanese”).
