Etymology
Probably from اِهْدَعْش (ihdaʕš) by lenition (see South Levantine Arabic هْدَعْش (hdaʕš)), itself from احْدَعْش (ḥdaʕš, iḥdaʕš) by dissimilation of the pharyngeal ح (ḥ) from the pharyngeal ع (ʕ). Ultimately from Arabic أَحَدَ عَشَرَ (ʔaḥada ʕašara).
Pronunciation
Numeral
إدعش • (ʔidaʕš)
Usage notes
- The attributive form is used when counting a noun:
- إدَعْشَر مَرَّة ― ʔidaʕšar marra ― eleven times
- However, some coastal Syrian varieties have no separate attributive form:
- (coastal Syria) إدَعْش مَرَّة ― ʔidaʕš marra ― eleven times
