הֶחְשִׁיךְ • (hekhshíkh) (hif'il construction, passive counterpart הוחשך / הֻחְשַׁךְ)

  1. (intransitive) to become dark
  2. (transitive) to darken or black out
  3. (Mishnaic Hebrew) to wait for the darkfall
    • a. 217 C.E., Mishnah. Shabbat, section 23.3:
      אין מחשיכין על התחום לשכור פועלים
      One must not walk to the extreme end of the Sabbath limit to await the darkfall for the purpose of hiring workmen.
