Inherited from Proto-Slavic *ukryti. By surface analysis, у- (u-) +‎ кри́ти (krýty). Compare Russian укры́ть (ukrýtʹ), Belarusian укры́ць (ukrýcʹ), Polish ukryć, Czech ukrýt, Slovak ukryť, Serbo-Croatian укрити/ukriti.

The forms укри́ти (ukrýty) (used after consonants or at the beginning of a clause) and вкри́ти (vkrýty) (used after vowels) differ in pronunciation but are considered variants of the same word.
