Inherited from Classical Mongolian ᠲᠥᠷᠥᠬᠦ (törökü), from Middle Mongol 脫列 (tuō-liè /töre-/), from Proto-Mongolic *töre- (“to be born”), from Proto-Turkic *törü- (“to be born, originate”).
Cognate with Buryat түрэхэ (türexe), Kalmyk төрх (törx) and Turkish türemek (“to breed, descend, originate”).
