Univerbation of не- (nje-) + моўны (mówny), possibly with dissimilation. Related to мо́віць (móvicʹ), размаўля́ць (razmawljácʹ). Literally (somewhat) "something small not speaking". Cognates include Czech nemluvně, Ukrainian немовля́ (nemovljá), Polish niemowlę with the same meaning.
