зӏий

Ingush

Etymology

Borrowed from substrate, from Old Georgian გრძღაბი (grʒɣabi).

Genko (1930) compares the Ingush form with the Ossetian one, while Abaev (1989) considers the Ingush form to be borrowing from Ossetian. However, the Ingush form must be related to the Old Georgian form due to the length of the vowel and the pharyngealization of the consonant. Compare with жӏалӣ (žˀalii, dog), how the phoneme (ɣ) of Old Georgian becomes /ʕ/ in the Vainakh.
