Inherited from Old East Slavic бобъ (bobŭ), from Proto-Slavic *bòbъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *bab-а/āˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰabʰ-o/eh₂, from a European substrate root appearing in Indo-European like *bʰabʰ- (“bean”). Cognate with Russian боб (bob), Latin faba.
