Etymology
Inherited from Classical Mongolian ᠠᠮᠢᠲᠠᠨ (amitan, “creature”), from Middle Mongol ᠠᠮᠢᠲᠠᠨ (amitan, grammatically plural orantive), from Proto-Mongolic *amitan. By surface analysis, амь (amʹ, “breath; life”) + -тан (-tan, substantive ornative suffix). Cognate with Buryat амитан (amitan), Kalmyk әмтн (ämtn), etc.
Compare typologically Latin animal < animus < Proto-Indo-European *h₂enh₁mos (“breath”); Proto-Germanic *deuzą (whence English deer) << Proto-Indo-European *dʰwes-.
