Я̈

Russian

Letter

Я̈ • () (upper case, lower case я̈)

  1. (obsolete, pre-1918 spelling) The letter Я with a diaeresis.

Usage notes

In the pre-1918 orthography, the letter Я (Ja) was pronounced like Ё (Jo) in the words ея (jeja) and нея (neja). A diaeresis was optionally used to indicate this, similarly to Ѣ̈ () and Ё. The reform has replaced every instance of that letter by Ё.
