From Proto-Hellenic *téretron, from Proto-Indo-European *térh₁trom, from the root *terh₁- (to rub away at; to bore, drill). By surface analysis, τετραίνω (tetraínō, to bore) +‎ -τρον (-tron). Cognate with Old Irish tarathar.
