From Middle Low German sennep, from Proto-West Germanic *senap, from Latin sināpi, from Ancient Greek σίνᾱπι (sínāpi). Alternatively, from Middle High German sënef (from the same source), with phonemic replacement of /f/ (which is not found in native Slavic words) with /p/. Either way, cognate with German Senf.
