From Proto-Celtic *ouxselos, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ewps-. Cognate with Welsh uchel, Old Breton uchel (Breton uhel), and with Ancient Greek ὕψι (húpsi, “on high, aloft”) and ὑψηλός (hupsēlós, “high, lofty”).
